Next Open Meeting: at Thornton Methodist Church on Wednesday 6th December at 7.15 p.m. in Room 1.

This is a shorter report as our next Open Meeting will be too late for inclusion here and last month’s was very lengthy. As promised TAG sent in a carefully worded, detailed response to Wyre Council’s Draft Local Plan (to read our response, go to our web site). We have asked to be involved in the Public Hearing to be held next year so in the mean time we wait and see.

Christmas Lights

We are now very busy with the preparations for the Christmas Lights switch-on on November 28th at the Thornton Shopping Centre and when you read this we hope all will have gone smoothly. Our fingers are firmly crossed for kind weather over Christmas and New Year – not too much windy weather. If there is any problem to report concerning the lights TAG needs to contact J M Services so ring my number 01253 823516 and not Wyre Council. TAG is responsible for the lights at the Shopping Centre and in front of the Little Theatre. Unfortunately we have not been able to solve the Medical Centre lights problem and so this year that tree will not be lit up. We will try to find an alternative for next year.

An important date in our calendar is TAG’s AGM – to be held on January 10th 2018 at the Thornton Methodist Church at 7.15. This will be followed by our Open Meeting. Membership of TAG is open to all Thornton residents with a membership fee of £1 per year. It is excellent value. Since we feel it is important to be independent from any political party, Councillors are welcome to attend at the invitation of the Committee. We also ask for £1 per head per meeting attended to cover the cost of room hire.

Flood Action Group

Thornton Action Group now has a spin-off – the Flood Action group which has been organised at the request or Wyre Council to provide flood awareness in Thornton. The Flood Action Group will be a permanent agenda item from next month so if you have any issues concerning flooding then cone along – our flood wardens will be there.

New Benches at the War Memorial

Working in co-operation with County Councillors Andrea Kay, John Shedwick and Alan Vincent, TAG has obtained funding for 3 new benches at the War Memorial, a place for remembrance and reflection. One of these benches is a “Lest We Forget” bench to commemorate Joseph Blackburn, a Thornton market gardener who gave his life in World War I. The benches will be installed by Wyre Council soon. TAG members were honoured to take part in the Service on Remembrance Sunday at the War Memorial joining so many residents in this annual community event.

TAG would like to wish you all a Happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year and remember if you value our local area and want to keep it as safe, pleasant and green as possible then come to our open meetings next year. Put January 10th in your diary. May we also thank Simon and Romay for producing Wyre Matters. I gather the magazines always disappear ‘like hot cakes’ from the distribution centres – so Simon and Romay have a much deserved rest in January.
